CAN YOU HELP? PLEASE SUBMIT A SWAB |
In order to complete the research the researchers need additional dog families. You do not have to own all of the dogs submitted. If members know of others who have related dogs, get together and make a contribution to this research for the benefit of the breed.
VetGen is looking for least two affected dogs within a family group such as siblings, half-siblings, parents, grandparents, etc. We also need the DNA from available unaffected close relatives to the affected dogs: also siblings, half-siblings, parents, grandparents and even aunts, and uncles.
DNA will be collected from these dogs by means of a set of cheek swabs, 4 brushes per dog. The brushes are simply swiped in the mouths of the dogs. Along with the swabs are included are the instructions for swabbing, a data information sheet that asks for information on the name, sex and age or the dog, and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for their return. We do need a copy of the pedigree so we that know how the dogs are related to one another. This helps us to understand the mode of inheritance.
Once we have located the mutant or deviant gene, and have developed the test, puppies can be swabbed with little DNA brushes and the owner will know which dog is affected, a carrier, or clear. Since DNA never changes dogs only have to be tested once.
Remember, this research is free, and again, totally confidential. Anyone interested in participating can contact:
