CONTINUING EDUCATION

Our strategy promotes new ideas, better methods and the use of needed skills to breed the better dogs.  It begins when a breeder purchases three-ring notebooks and uses them for:
1.     Traditional pedigrees
2.     "Stick Dog" Color Chart and Symbols pedigrees
3.     Articles you want to save
4.     Your litter evaluations
5.     Your Breeder Newsletters.

To get you started, http://www.breedingbetterdogs.com      Click on “articles”       and print those you need.
My suggestions:
    Selecting Sires
    Developing High Achievers
    Singletons
    Founders Effect

Here are two examples of how continuing education works.  Supposed you want to make a specific improvement or a correction in your breeding program.  You have heard about the method called "formula breeding" that focuses on maintaining and improving specific traits and type.  It assumes that if there is an outstanding ancestor (a grandfather), his genes can be passed on.  To learn more, go to the website, click on Articles, print “Bracketts Formula”, read it, use the ideas and file it your notebook.

A second benefit of continuing education is the learning experience such as attending breeder seminars. A list has been posted for 2006 and 2007. Go to the home page and click on “Seminars”, then click on “schedule” to find one in or near your city.   New ones are added each month, check it regularly.  If you don’t see one in your area perhaps your club would be interested in sponsoring one.

EUROPE - PET MICHROCHIPPING

Europe and all of its trading partners have now mandated microchipping as a condition of positive identification.  This rule applies to pets being shipped in and out of the EU.  Switzerland's Federal Council has taken this even further.  They introduced compulsory microchipping of all dogs.  The goal is to have all dogs clearly marked by 2007.  Currently about 25% of all Swiss bred dogs are microchipped.  It is mandatory in five of the country's 26 counties.  Americans should expect that the US government might consider a microchip requirement for pets being shipped.

SELL YOUR PUPS - AKC’S WEBSITE

A breeder of an AKC-registered litter may list the litter by selecting the On-line Breeder option at http://www.akc.org/classified.
AKC asks breeders for the following information: litter birth date, number of males/females, sire and dam names, titles etc.
Potential puppy buyers can search the database by breed, state, or zip code and then contact the breeder directly.
Breeders are asked if they:
Are a member of their breed’s AKC Parent Club, local specialty club, or an AKC All-Breed club
Conduct health screenings and guarantee the puppy’s health
Provide a written bill of sale
Accept puppies back if any issues arise
Have breeding stock DNA certified by the AKC
Provide information on socialization, training, feeding, immunizations etc.
For more information visit      http://www.akc.org/classified         or call AKC Customer Service at 919-233-9767.

FROZEN SEMEN

Several readers have asked about DNA technology and how it can be used to include and exclude pups from the AKC stud book.  Others have asked about the combined use of frozen semen and multiple-sired litters. Here are the answers.  Prior to 1998, there was no DNA requirement for using frozen semen.  That changed and now any dog collected (frozen or fresh-extended) after October 1, 1998, must have a sample on file with the AKC.

Dual-sired litters are allowed from frozen semen, fresh semen, natural or any combination.  These breedings require a special application.   Cheek swab samples must be obtained and submitted to AKC.   For more information about dual-sired litters and DNA contact: http://www.akc.org/dna/frozen_semen.cfm

Surrogate Dams - Future Breeding Model?

In February, 2006, the AKC allowed the registration of a litter produced using a surrogate dam. The request involved a future Portuguese water dog litter produced from eggs harvested from a now spayed bitch using a surrogate dam of the same breed.  A similar request was approved by the Board in 1999, but no litter was actually produced at that time.  This permission was granted on a one-time basis, using a surrogate dam, under the following conditions:
·        The sire, donor dam and surrogate dam must be AKC-registered Portuguese Water Dogs, with AKC DNA profiles on file.  Each member of the
resulting litter must have AKC DNA profiles on file.
·        The application to register the litter must include a statement, certified by a veterinarian as to the date the eggs were collected, inseminated,
         and implanted.
·        Parentage will be evaluated using the AKC DNA profiles, with all costs borne by the breeder.  All members of the litter must be offspring of the
sire and the donor dam.  The litter will not be eligible for registration if the DNA results indicate the surrogate dam is the genetic dam.

REGISTER LITTERS ON-LINE

Breeders can now avoid the delays of mail and paperwork if they register their litter online at http://www.akc.org/litters.
This is ONLY for litters with one owner.  This online litter registration service provides the dam’s owner with the authority to register the litter.  Electronic notification is sent to the sire’s owner to go online to complete their part of the litter registration. During the online registration process, all data is verified by AKC and immediate feedback is given to the litter owner.  A simplified online registration process is also available when the same person owns both the sire and dam. The process takes only a few minutes, For FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) http://www.akc.org/litters.

THE NATIONAL SHOW, A SUCCESS

More than  2,600 top dogs from 50 States and 20 Countries were involved in the American Kennel Club/ Iams Fifth Annual National Championship on January 14 and 15, 2006 in Tampa, Fla.  The show also included the AKC National Agility Champion-
ship and the AKC National Obedience Invitational (entries of 689 and 134 respectively) making for a combined entry of 3,471 for all three events.

The National Championship offered more than $225,000 in prize money.  The Best in Show winner received over $50,000. The breeder of the Best in Show winner was awarded $15,000.

One interesting fact is that approximately 1,000 dogs representing nearly 40 percent of the total were also entered in the Bred-by" competition.  For more information about the National Championship, visit http://www.akc.org/           or        http://www.topdogshow.com/

MICROCHIPS, LOST AND FOUND

In troubled times the identification of dogs has become extremely important. Lost dogs can only be reunited with their owners if they have current contact information on file with the AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR). If you have moved or changed phone numbers it might take longer before you and your lost dog are reunited.  That’s more to worry about and more stress on your dog. The CAR database uses the owner’s name, address and telephone numbers, which are linked to the pet’s unique identification number, whether it is a microchip, tattoo, or AKC CAR-issued collar tag.

Too many owners believe they will never lose their dog. In retrospect, those who experience these unexpected events wish they had enrolled in AKC/CAR which provides recovery services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. AKC/CAR is so successful
that they are now reuniting an owner with their lost pet every 7 minutes, 24/7.

Those who enroll their pets with AKC CAR share in its highly-regarded philanthropic history of veterinary school scholarships, small grants to animal rescue groups and, donations of free scanners to non-profit shelters.  Breeders that have dog/cats already microchipped but not enrolled in AKC/CAR can enroll them on-line http://www.akccar.org/

The worldwide view has also changed.  Microchipping is expanding throughout Europe and all of its trading partners. They have mandated microchipping as a condition of positive identification.  This rule applies to pets being shipped in and out of the European Union.  Switzerland's Federal Council has taken this even further and introduced compulsory microchipping for all dogs.  Their goal is to have all dogs clearly marked by 2007. Currently about 25% of all Swiss-bred dogs are micro- chipped.
The US government is considering a microchip requirement.  It could impact those who ship dogs/cat to shows on commercial carriers.  If your dog or cat is not microchipped or if it is already microchipped but not enrolled in the AKC CAR database, you can go online and enroll them at http://www.akccar.org/

There is a one time fee of $12.50 for the life of the pet. It’s a bargain. Don’t worry, CAR enrolls all brands of microchips including Home Again, Trovan, AVID, ISO etc. and has over 3 million dogs and over 450,000 cats in their database.  Responsible dog owners should chip and enroll all of their dogs and cats.  The Katrina and other hurricane victims serve as a constant reminder
since over 90% were not microchipped.

HEART DISEASE (DOGS) – NEW RESEARCH

A study conducted at the University of California at Los Angeles found that people hospitalized with advanced heart disease will do better if they have visitors than if they are left alone.  One of the best visitors was found to be a dog.  In the first controlled study on the effects of pet therapy, a random sample of acute and critically ill heart patients showed that anxiety (measured on a standard rating scale) dropped 24 percent for those visited by a dog.

Senior author Kathie M. Cole reported that dogs from twelve breeds were used to study the “dog effect” on patient anxiety. Besides anxiety levels, patient levels of epinephrine, a hormone the body makes when under stress were reduced by 17%. DOG ATTACKS

The AKC has adopted the following regulation, which applies to all AKC events: "Any dog, that in the opinion of the Event Committee (Bench Show Committee), who attacks a person or a dog at an AKC event resulting in an injury, and is believed by that Event Committee to present a hazard to persons or other dogs, shall be disqualified.  When the dog is disqualified by the Event Committee, a report shall be filed with the Executive Secretary of the American Kennel Club.  A disqualified dog may not again compete at any AKC event nor be on the grounds of an AKC event unless and until, following application for reinstatement by the owner to the American Kennel Club, the owner receives official notification in writing from the AKC that the dog's eligibility has been reinstated."

The AKC staff in-house reinstatement committee procedure is as follows:
1. Verify with the disqualifying judge that the dog should be considered for reinstatement.
2. Have the exhibitor send documentation of successful completion of stability training since the attack. (I.e. Obedience training or CGC)
3. If 1 & 2 are completed the dog is then scheduled for a reinstatement exam by 3 judges with the exam monitored by the AKC Field Rep.
A dog would not be considered for reinstatement for more than one incident.
